Description

This is a painting I did for some friends of mine. We had a little party for a bunch of kids and I took this picture of Alyssa that I thought I could work with. I used the photo for reference. I traced the edges because I really wanted to make sure I got the likeness correct. I hope you find this technique acceptable.

I added the blue ball because the original photo was too dark for me to see enough detail around her feet. See the link to the photo. The photo is cropped from a larger photo that had another child in it. I don't have the parents' permission to upload the other child, that's why it's cropped. However, that child may be my next portrait.

Done mostly in PS6; used PS7 brushes for the grass. Spent about 14 hours on this.

Since you traced the photo I can't give you a score for photorealism, or accuracy, but for your technique and style I'll say +5. I like the hard brush style on the skin. However, this is just me, but I really wouldn't recomend using a brush that isn't just a plain circle. premade brushes like the one used for the grass give the imasge a kind of "manufactured" quality. Speckled brushes, like the one used on the ball do work sometimes, as I think they did in this piece. Nice w

Cool stuff, it's a good likeness to the picture and I like the improvisation for the eyes, which look too dark to see at all in the photo. I think it would have been nice to see some blue reflected light on the child from the blue ball, and visa versa - flesh tinted reflected light on the ball. Good work :)

i like what you did to bring the girl out more than how she was shown in the photo.. much more summery..

Nicely done, I love the realistic view of this and then the somewhat intentional non-realistic look to parts of it. Its very interesting, great view point, it makes it all ineteresting instead of just flat. Incredible detail and depth, it actually feels like there are layers to it, not just one painting, like you can go past the little girl. Fantastic work

just some caution, tracing too much might result in a dependency on tracing. although producing the like-ness.

good technique!

I think that tracing wont help your art in the long run, but you seem to be a very good artist even so. I love the way the shadow is cast. Excellent.+&

To answer all the tracing comments, I agree with all of you. If I were to draw this on paper I would not have to trace. In fact, I think I can pull it off without tracing it digitally too. I come from a commercial art background and it's my nature to find a faster, better way to do things. Clients don't necessarily care how you do things as long as it's done and done well.

My concentration was more on painting than struggling to get the likeness right. As I get more comfortable with drawing digitally, I will practice more and will put up non-traced artwork.

This is a sample of my non-traced work. But I don't like the painting technique in this too much. Gina

Thanks for the critiques. :)

Actually the tracing technique was used by the old masters back in the day for sight-size technique. It was difficult to setup because they had to paint on glass and look at their subject through a head positioner. I personally don't use this technique on the computer aanymore to hone my freehand ability, but you can be damned sure I would use it if I wanted to get something perfect.

People who think tracing is not part of the art of drawing need a reality check and probably have never gone to a classical art school.

End product and copyright issues resolved are what really count. Lots of the elite artists on this site use a few tracing techniques when working online...any good artist would. You would be surpsied who does this.

Very cute girl, btw
